Having a child boosts personal development skills in men

People often say that having a baby changes their life for the better. Now, researchers at Oregon State University have determined just how much a man's life is improved after having a child.

In a 19-year study of 200 adolescents who were considered "at risk" at the beginning of the trial, researchers found that having a baby in their 20s or 30s resulted in a significant decrease in their rates of crime and use of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana.

"It is hopeful that for both older and younger men, tobacco use tended to decrease following the birth of a first child," said lead author David Kerr, assistant professor of psychology. "This kind of change could have important health consequences for men and for their families."

It's important to note that people with substance abuse issues may not want to rush into fatherhood. However, for those who need a little push toward healthier living and are in a committed relationship, having a child may do good things for their personal development skills.

But remember: The keys to success in life include thinking over decisions very carefully.
