An unhealthy diet may be detrimental to the brain

It’s long been known that eating foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt can lead to excess fat in the body and possibly cause diseases like diabetes and cancer. This is why author Ilchi Lee recommends a healthy diet as a key step in awakening and fulfillment.

Now, researchers at the University of Washington have reported that a high-fat diet may also have a harmful effect on the body’s most important organ: the brain.

“The possibility that brain injury may be a consequence of the over-consumption of a typical American diet offers a new explanation for why sustained weight loss is so difficult for most obese individuals to achieve,” said presenting author Joshua Thaler, M.D., Ph.D.

In a mouse model, the researchers discovered that a diet high in fats led to inflammation in the brain as well as neural loss and damage. Moreover, the brain exhibited a response that is most often seen in individuals who have experienced stroke or multiple sclerosis.
